Why is there no list of Virginia Christian counselors on this page?
A public, complete, verified dataset of “Christian counselors in Virginia” is not published by DHP. Association directories we checked (including the Virginia Association of Clinical Counselors public finder) are empty or are not Christian-specific. Inventing names, phones, or reviews would be unsafe. This tool routes you to primary sources instead.
What is the difference between a licensed clinician and a pastoral counselor in Virginia?
Licensed professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, and related roles are regulated by DHP boards. Clergy counseling can be exempt from Board of Counseling licensure when it is within regular ministerial duties and meets the conditions in Code of Virginia § 54.1-3501(3). Exemption is not the same as a clinical license. If you need diagnosis, a treatment plan, or insurance billing, start with a DHP-licensed clinician and verify the license.
Does a Christian filter on a public directory prove the person is licensed in Virginia?
No. Psychology Today, AACC Christian Care Connect, and similar sites are private listings. Profiles can be incomplete or out of date. After you shortlist someone, search that exact name and occupation on the Virginia DHP License Lookup and confirm status is current.
If I use telehealth, does the counselor still need a Virginia license?
For clinical counseling of a client in Virginia, the practitioner generally needs the appropriate Virginia credential (or compact authority where it applies). The Counseling Compact is described on the Virginia Board of Counseling site. Pastoral care from a church is a different legal category. Ask the provider which board licenses them and then check DHP.
How do I report a licensed clinician?

Will insurance cover Christian counseling?
Coverage usually follows the clinician’s license and network status, not the word “Christian.” Confirm license type, NPI, and in-network status with the insurer. Pastoral counseling is often self-pay. This page does not check benefits.
